The Battle of Actium in 31 BCE marked the defeat of Antonius and Cleopatra by Octavian. Though beyond the lives of Sulla, Caesar, and Cato, it completed the political process their age had set in motion.

Historical Context

Actium was presented as a struggle against eastern monarchy and corruption, but it was also the final contest among Roman dynastic powers.

Consequences

Octavian’s victory prepared the Principate. The Republic’s forms survived, but power had gathered around one man.
