Mos Maiorum

Themes entry in the Livarva Republic Atlas.

Themes

Mos maiorum, the ancestral way, was the unwritten moral constitution of Rome. It was custom, precedent, expectation, and inherited discipline.

Overview

Mos maiorum, the ancestral way, was the unwritten moral constitution of Rome. It was custom, precedent, expectation, and inherited discipline.

Importance

The Republic depended on mos maiorum as much as on written law. When custom lost authority, legal forms alone could not save the state.

In the Livarva Trilogy

All three works examine what happens when Romans continue to speak the language of ancestors while acting in a transformed world.

This first atlas entry is drafted from the Livarva manuscripts and will be expanded with exact chapter and source references in a later version.
